Just recently the Oscar- winning director Mike Nichols has been selected by the American Film Institute to receive an appreciation which is the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award. Mike Nichols has been chosen by the American Film Institute to receive the 38th annual Life Achievement award. Mike Nichols has been recognized as one of the excellent and outstanding directors in American movies because of his master works that bagged distinguished awards. Mike Nichol’s first Oscar nomination was with the film “Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf?” in 1966 and the following year he won the Oscar award for the film “The Graduate”. His other works like Carnal Knowledge, Silkwood, Working Girl and Primary Colors are few of the movies that made him earned other remarkable awards. Together with Nichol, other AFI Life Achievement Award recipients are Sean Connery, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, Elizabeth Taylor and directors John Ford, Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock and Martin Scorsese.
Howard Stringer, the Chairman of AFI Board of Trustees said, “Genius is a word oft overused in our world but not in the case of Mike Nichols. His artistry has spanned the mediums of modern storytelling – movies, television and the stage and his gifts across five decades continue to inspire artists and audiences alike.” Mike Nichols on the other hand, said in a statement that he is surprised and pleased. He sees that the AFI award is truly an honor. Mike Nichols is one of only ten people to have all the major American Entertainment awards namely the Oscar, Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award. A project called 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast received an appreciation by being hailed as the Best Infotainment 2009 given by the Parsec Award. The award was presented at the Dragon* Con Convention in Atlanta Georgia last Saturday, September 5.
